The front of the American Gold Eagle Coin has a rendition of Augustus Saint Gaudens’ full length figure of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Sculptor Miley Busiek designed a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings that is featured on the opposite side. 1986 through 1991 American Gold Eagle Coins are dated with Roman Numerals. From 1992 to present, the American Gold Eagle Coins are dated with Arabic numbers. The coins have face values of 5, $10, $25, and $50. These are their legal values reflecting their issue and monetized value as coins. They are legal tender for all debts public and private at their face values. The actual value of the American Gold Eagle Coin varies daily depending on the current selling price of gold. Most of the American Gold Eagle Coins are available as proof versions for coin collectors. The proof versions carry a “W” mint mark below the date.
