Spring Home Improvement Tips

Spring has arrived and now is the time to get those spring home improvement projects underway. Spring brings a change in weather, and many Texans enjoy spending more time outside. Here are a few home improvement tips to help you get your home ready for Spring.

Power wash your patio or deck. A deck or patio is a great way to enjoy the Spring weather, but before you can fully enjoy sitting outdoor, you need to give the deck a good cleaning. A power washer is a very simple way to clean the dirt and debris from your deck or patio. If you do not own a power washer, you can usually rent one from a home improvement center. You can also use a broom and your water hose to clean the deck, but a power washer may be the best solution.

Service your air conditioner. Spring means the hot Texas summer is just around the corner, and that means running the air conditioner almost every day. You should have your air conditioner serviced anually to make sure it is working properly and is using energy efficiently. If your air conditioner is more than ten years old, you may want to look into the cost of replacing it. New air conditioners are more energ efficient than older unit, so the cost may be offset with energy savings.

Clean your rain gutters. If your home has rain gutters, Spring is the time to make sure they are clear of any debris such as leaves and sticks. Cleaning gutters used to require climbing up a ladder and using a water hose to wash out the trash, however there are now tools available that attach to a garden hose and allow you to clean the gutter from the ground.

Reseal your wood deck. If your deck was sealed more than a few years ago, you may need to reapply sealant to the wood. Check the current sealant by pouring a glass of water on the deck when it is dry. If the water soaks into the wood, you should reseal it. If the water beads off the deck, the sealant is still good.

Close your chimney. Fireplaces are wonderful in the winter, but you need to close the flue during the rest of the year to keep your cool air from escaping through the chimney. Spring is also a good time to check the chimney on the roof to repair any damage that could cause a leak when the Spring rains come. You might also consider having the chimney cleaned by a professional to be prepared for next Winter.
